These 17 original voice recordings were recently discovered by Daniel Mănescu and Tiberiu Răsădeanu in the course of their research on the Aromanians and their communities in the Balkans. The recordings were made in 1928 in Bucharest, possibly at the Societatea de Cultura Macedo – Romana, the leading Aromanian organization in Romania at that time.

Description

Notes:

  • There are two main types of recordings: stories (1, 3, 11, 12) and songs/poems (2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17).
  • The stories include a dialogue, memoirs, and a traditional tale. While most are traditional, some are contemporary and have political overtones.
  • The songs are all a cappella and 3 of them (5, 7, & 10) are in the polyphonic style of the Albanian Aromanians known as Farsharotsi. Some recordings actually contain two songs.
  • Some of the artists are women, most are men, three of whom were well-known among their contemporaries: Vasil Mushi, a lawyer and political leader in Romania, originally from Korce, Albania; Nicutsa Balamaci, a school superintendent in Albania and son of the assassinated priest Haralambie Balamaci of Pliassa, Albania; and Tache Papahagi of Avdhela, Greece, who emigrated to Romania and became a leading scholar of Aromanian language and culture.
