    Florica Van Epp

    AGE: 89 • Wilmington

Florica (Cicma) Van Epp, of Wilmington, DE, passed away Monday, November 24, 2014 at home in Wilmington, DE after a long period of disability which was the result of a stroke six years ago. In the last few years she suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. She was 89.

Born in Newport, NH, she was the oldest of four children of the late Dr. Haralambie and Ioana Cicma of Providence, RI where she grew up with her two sisters and a brother.

Florica was educated in Providence schools, graduating from Classical High School in Providence. She graduated with a B.A. in Chemistry from Pembroke College (now Brown University) in 1948, where she met her late husband, also a chemistry major, James E. Van Epp, class of 1946. Sadly, he predeceased her by only approximately one month.

She was a homemaker for most of her adult life, raising three children. After her husband began an early retirement and her children were grown, she embarked on part time employment, primarily at Lady’s Image in Wilmington. She also worked for Avon. She had a strong belief in Christianity and was a member of several Baptist and Presbyterian churches during her lifetime. She was very involved with Vacation Bible School at Bethel Baptist Church. She adored children and loved watching them grow in God’s Word. She was a former deacon at Concord Presbyterian Church in Wilmington. She was an avid golfer, a bowler, a bridge player, and enjoyed gardening and cooking. She was former president of the DuPont Country Club Associate Women’s Golf group and won the Associate Women’s Championship twice at DuPont CC.

She was married for 66 years before losing her husband, James, a month before her own passing. She was predeceased by her two younger sisters, Elaine (Darling) and Despina (Duane). Her brother, George, of Saunderstown, RI, two sons, James Jr. and John, one daughter Joanne (Feindt), and three grandchildren James, Jared, and Julia survive her. She was a loving and supportive wife, and a loving and caring mother and grandmother to her children and her grandchildren. Florica had many friends throughout her lifetime whom she loved dearly.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2014 from 5 to 6 p.m. at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, Delaware, where a memorial service will begin at 6 p.m. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, please send a donation in the name of Florica C. Van Epp to: Seasons Hospice, 220 Continental Drive, Suite 101, Newark, DE 19713.
