    Balamaci, a longtime resident of Bridgeport, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 4, 2009, at his home with his family by his side.

    He was born in Bridgeport, on July 21, 1922, to Dimitrie and Vasilichia Balamaci. His father passed away when Dennis was four; his mother later married Dionisi Teja. Dennis spent his youth in Bridgeport, New York City and Woonsocket, RI, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Providence College in 1943. During World War II, he served as a dental and medical technician with the 1st Camp Battalion Medical Detachment in the Philippines from 1943-1946.

    When he returned to the U.S., he took a job as a teacher in Little Compton, RI, and received a Master’s Degree in education from Boston University. He moved to Bridgeport in 1951, where he worked for Sikorsky Aircraft until his retirement in 1987. Dennis was a devout member of St. Dimitrie Romanian Orthodox Church, which his father helped found in Bridgeport, and he served for many years on the Parish Council.

    He also was a decades-long member of the Board of Directors of the Society Farsarotul, the oldest and largest Macedonian-Romanian (Vlach) organization in the United States. Dennis was coach and contributor to the North End Little League, as well as a coach for the Eastern Orthodox Chruch Youth Basketball League. Those who loved him knew he had on abiding passion: the New York Yankees. how fitting it was that on July 21, his 87th birthday, his beloved team bumped the Boston Red Sox out of first place.

    Dennis is survived by his devoted wife, Frusina Giavara Balamaci, Earlier this year, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. He also is survived four children, Marilyn Balamaci, of Rye, NY, James Balamaci, of Anchorage, Alaska, Caryn (Nicholas) Balamaci, of Scarsdale, NY, and Dean (Jo Anna)Balamaci, of Fairfax, VA; four grandchildren, Julie, Andrew, Kathryn and Matthew Balamaci; his sister, Trulie Rich, of Bridgeport; and numerous nieces, nephews and many cousins and friends.

    Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 7, 2009 at 11 a.m. DIRECTLY at St. Dimitrie Romanian Orthodox Church, 504 Sport Hill Road, Easton. Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Bridgeport. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2009 from 4-8 p.m. in the Lesko & Polke Fuenral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield Center.

    In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Dimitrie Building Fund, P.O. Box 146, Monroe, CT 06468. Dennis loved his family and church, and will be missed.
