Unique volumes on our recent history are now available online
Another huge milestone in the digitizing of information about the Vlachs — the masterful works of the late Asterios Koukoudis are now available from the Public Central Library of Veria at http://vlachs.gr/el/news/koukoudis-medousa, including the authoritative English-language volume, “The Vlachs: Metropolis and Diaspora.” Almost anyone in our community in America will find some aspect of their ancestors’ history in this one book, which also boasts many old photographs and illustrations.
We were fortunate to befriend Asterio in the 1990s and we invited him to the US to speak at our Centennial Anniversary banquet in 2003 — his remarks there can also be found on the Veria site. That speech was a powerful reality check for those of us who had an outdated impression of the position of our people in modern Greece, and it helped shift the focus of the Society away from any nationalism and strictly on our people, our language, and our history.
We are grateful to all those whose hard work made these volumes available globally, but most of all to our late friend Asterios Koukoudis — may his memory be eternal!
