Vasil “Billy” Gartsu
LEICESTER — Vasil “Billy” Gartsu, 79, of Fairview Drive, a World War II veteran and a retired letter carrier, died Monday, March 4, in Holy Trinity Eastern Orthodox Nursing Center, Worcester.
He leaves his wife of 43 years, Elva R. (Wood) Gartsu; a brother, Mircea Gartsu of Worcester; a sister, Julie Doku of East Swanzea, N.H.; nephews and nieces. A brother, Thomas Gartsu, predeceased him.
He was born in Woonsocket, R.I., son of George and Sophie (Dima) Gartsu, and lived in Leicester for the past 36 years. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving as a private first class. He was wounded at Iwo Jima.
Mr. Gartsu was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 20 years, retiring in 1975. Previously, he was a baker for Table Talk Pies, Worcester.
He was a member of St. Nicholas Romanian Orthodox Church, Shrewsbury, and served as its epitrop and was a member of the Sasarot Society. He was also a member of the National Letter Carriers Association and served on the town hall and Center School commissions for 15 years.
Mr. Gartsu was veterans administration volunteer service coordinator in Worcester, a life member of Disabled American Veterans and a member of the Marine Corps League and the American Legion. He was active in trying to get housing for elderly veterans built in Worcester.
The funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, March 7, in St. George Orthodox Cathedral, 30 Anna St., Worcester. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, in Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St., Worcester, and 9 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday, March 7, in the cathedral. A Trisagion service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, in the funeral home. Disabled American Veterans will conduct a ritual at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, in the funeral home.
