Marica Tassi Popescu
Marica Tassi Popescu died on Tuesday, May 15, her 92nd birthday.
Formerly of Bridgeport and Fairfield, CT, Marica spent her final years at Holy Trinity Orthodox Nursing Home in Worcester, MA.
Marica was born in the mountain village of Patacina near Edessa, Greece, daughter of George Tassi Popescu and Chiratsa (Pariza) Popescu. She was the fifth of eleven children and helped her mother raise her younger siblings while taking over many arduous household duties in their home without electricity or plumbing.
During World War II and the Greek Civil War, Marica’s talent as a seamstress and dressmaker provided income for her large family, helping them to survive the hardships of war-ravaged Greece. Marica eventually was able to secure passage to the USA in 1956. She settled in Bridgeport, joining her sister Florica, where she was embraced by the St. Dimitrie Romanian community, and found work at Hubbell.
Marica continued to be the loving steward of her family, saving every dollar to help bring her only brother and three sisters to Bridgeport during the late 1950s. Marica then turned her talent and skilled hands to Popescu Dental Lab, her bother’s successful enterprise in Bridgeport. For more than 25 years she worked long hours to create perfect crowns and dentures for thousands of customers.
Marica also acted as a surrogate mother to her many nieces and nephews, helping to raise them with the same devotion and love as if they were her own children. For her kindness, unselfishness, and her shy, sweet, patient and self-sacrificing nature, she will always be remembered with love.
Marica is survived by sisters Anna Zdru of Stratford, CT, Florica Tonna of Worcester, MA, Bia Michaels of Fairfield, CT, Veta Canouta of Athens, Greece, Lena Caragiorgu of Constanta, Romania, sister-in-law, Irene Popescu of Claremont, NH. and her nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Nicolae Popescu and her sisters, Victoria Carabuzi, and Beca Gherghe.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 18 at 12 noon at St. Dimitrie Romanian Orthodox Church, 504 Sport Hill Rd, Easton, CT. Friends may call at the Church on Friday from 11am until the time of services. May her memory be eternal. Arrangements in the care of the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home.
