George Louis Cipu
George Louis Cipu, age 86, of Trumbull, beloved husband of Julia Pittu Cipu, passed away on Saturday, September 14, 2013 in Ct Hospice, Branford with his loving family by his side.
Born and raised in New York City, son of the late Louis and Maria Batsu Cipu, George moved to Bridgeport in 1951 and later to Trumbull over forty years ago. He was a Veteran of the U.S Navy, serving during WWII.
Prior to coming to Bridgeport, George had worked as a bartender for New York’s Gotham Hotel. He later worked for Zemel Bros. for several years before opening his own business, “Cipu State Radio and TV Repair” and later Brookside TV until his retirement.
He had been an Alderman for the City of Bridgeport’s 4th District under the Mayor Samuel Tedesco administration.
Mr. Cipu was a very active member of St. Dimitrie Romanian Orthodox Church, having been the President and namer of the Mac-Aroy Youth Group, Vice President of the Church Council, the Romanian American Social Club and President and Treasurer of the Church Retirees. He sang in the Church choir and had also been a Church Cantor.
He was an avid N.Y Giants fan (both football and the baseball team of the old Polo Grounds) and enjoyed drawing, writing, playing pinocle, having a good ” scotch sour” and was well known for his great sense of humor and storytelling.
A loving husband father and grandfather, Popu especially cherished the times that he spent caring for his grandchildren and will be remembered as always being there to help anyone. In addition to Julia his devoted wife of 61 years, George leaves behind his children, Thomas Cipu and Rodica of Maryland, Christine Cipu Magistro and her husband Joseph of Branford and Joanne Cipu Seamon and her husband Michael of Shelton, grandchildren Michael Cipu, Lisa and Maria Magistro and Talia and Carly Seamon. He leaves behind his brother, ” Frate ” Nicholas Cipu and a sister Florence Carabina and her husband Chris all of Fairfield, a sister in law Veronica Atanase as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Cipu was predeceased by his sister, Sofia Cipu Nastu and brother in law Ray Nastu, a sister in law Despa Cipu, his nephew Robert Cipu and infant grandson Joseph Magistro. George’s advise to others who are missing something in their lives, ” Seek and You will find “. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:30am DIRECTLY at St. Dimitrie Romanian Orthodox Church, 504 Sport Hill Rd., Easton with Burial to follow in Lakeview Cemetery with full Military Honors. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 4-8pm in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Rd., Fairfield Center. The Trisagion Service will be at 5:45pm.
