Representation Structures of Aromanian Communities at the Beginning of the 20th Century – Communities and Ephorates
by Emanuil Ineoan
As early as the end of the 19th century, Romania had become a significant player in Balkan geopolitics. This was also fueled by the interest that the Kingdom of Romania showed towards to the Aromanian communities since the second half of the 19th century. The Romanian state, to be noted, at the request of some Aromanian scholars who reached decision-making positions in Bucharest or Iaşi, created a cultural, church-related, educational and diplomatic infrastructure south of the Danube, in what was then considered a state structure, namely, the Ottoman Empire. This is how the network of schools, churches, consulates, cultural associations, libraries appeared, the aim of which was the preservation of the identity of an ethnic group subjected to an aggressive assimilation campaign orchestrated mainly by the Greek actor, but also by the Serbian or Bulgarian one, and even by the Albanian one later on.
