Tiberius C. Cunia
Tiberius C. Cunia passed away April 7, 2016 at the age of 90. He was born 1/10/1926 in Edessa, Greece to Peter and Zaharia Cunia. He was a retired Professor at SUNY College of Environmental Sciences and Forestry. Prior to his tenure as a Professor, he was a Forester for the International Paper Company of Canada.
He was a highly educated man who studied in Romania, Italy, France & Canada. He was very accomplished as a Forester, Statistician and Mathematician, traveling to many universities to conduct Summer Class Sessions in Germany, Mexico, Burma and Yale University in Connecticut, to name a few. He received numerous awards in his field, but most notably in 1984, he was honored with a very prestigious award called the Alexander Von Humboldt Award given in Bonn, Germany. This award is granted in recognition of a researcher’s entire achievements to date to academics whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements in the future. He was also very active in “Farsarotul Society”, an Aromanian Society and was very proud to be the author of its first Aromanian Dictionary.
His true legacy and passion was his family. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, and friend. He was very opinionated and boisterous, but allowed everyone his or her opinion. He enjoyed working on his computer, watching classic movies and discussing economics and politics. He was predeceased by his first wife, Florica Cunia, in 1992.
He leaves behind his wife, Zoita Cunia, four children Demetrius-Paul (Erin), Cornelia Joseph (William), George (Liliana) and Shanna McCoy, and eight grandchildren, Garner Sammons, Ariana McCoy, Christopher Cunia, Florica Cunia, Aline Cunia, Michael Cunia, Sever Baltac and Ryan Barrett.
There will be calling hours on Sunday, April 10, 2016 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville. The Funeral will be held on Monday, April 11, 2016 at 11 a.m. at St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Church, 325 Waring Road, Syracuse, NY 13224.
